Abstract

This study was done to evaluate the honeybee acute toxicity, risks and safety intervals for the mixtures of end-use products (EUPs) in an orchard cultivated area. Among the EUPs sprayed for controlling plant pathogens and insects, there were 30 fungicides and 61 insecticides with a total of 59 active ingredients. Among those, 26 ingredients were toxic to honeybees because the LC50 was less than 11 μg/bee. The most toxic ingredient was abamectin which had a LC50 of 0.0022 μg/bee. All the fungicides were less toxic with a LC50 greater than 11 μg/bee. Twenty of the EUPs have a risk with a hazard quotient (HQ) greater than 50, and the others have a low risk. A dinotefuranetofenprox wettable powder had the longest Residual Time to 25% mortality and adverse effect (RT25 of 23 days). Among 96 mixtures, 8, 8, 9, 16, 8, 18, 20, and 9 mixtures had a RT25 of 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21 and 28 days, respectively. Honeybees are considered to be at high risk from pesticide mixtures with a RT25 greater than 21 days; therefore, further studies such as semifield tests are required.

(Ahn et al., 2008, Lee et al., 2008, Ahn et al., 2013).

Korean pesticide registration procedure for honeybee risk assessment.
