Abstract

As methyl bromide is being phased out, alternative fumigation and physical disinfestation techniques have been developed to control quarantine pests. Our study evaluated the efficacy of combined ethyl formate (EF) and phosphine (PH3) fumigation with subsequent cold treatment for controlling the citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri (Risso), and assessed its phytotoxic effects on oranges (Citrus × sinensis) to develop methyl bromide alternative treatment method. When assessing the susceptibility of P. citri eggs, nymphs, and adults to fumigation with either EF or PH3 or a combination of both at 5°C, we noted the eggs were the least susceptible in all the treatments. Combined treatment of EF 20 g/m3 + PH3 0.2 g/m3 for 4 hours in a 4 m3 chamber at 5°C led to a complete control of nymphs and adults. Similarly, eggs were completely controlled with combined EF 35 g/m3 + PH3 0.2 g/m3 for 4 hours in a 4 m3 chamber at 5°C. Gas desorption tests were performed to estimate worker re-entry safety. The PH3 levels dropped below safety limits within 19 hours, while EF concentrations decreased rapidly within 1 hour after venting. Following fumigation with EF 10−40 g/m3 + PH3 0.1−0.4 g/m3 for 4 hours at 5°C, there were no significant differences in the phytotoxicity assessments of color, firmness, total soluble solids, acid ratio, or weight loss. Our results demonstrate that combined EF and PH3 fumigation with cold treatment is an effective and safe alternative to methyl bromide for postharvest disinfestation of imported oranges.

(Lee et al., 2016; Jeon et al., 2022; Yoo et al., 2025; Ban et al. 2026).

𝑉𝑓=(1+T273)(1013.25×𝑀𝑣×C×VP×𝑀𝑤×𝑃𝑔)

에틸포메이트는 gas-tight syringe(Trajan Scientific and Medical, Victoria, Australia)를 이용하여 아크릴 훈증상 내부에 미리 설치한 filter paper에 시약을 투약 후 기화시켜 처리하였다.

ΔE=(Li−L0)2+(ai−a0)2+(bi−b0)2
ΔE : 색차
L, a, b : CIE L*a*b* 색공간 값
i : 조사 순서

당도는 PAL-1(ATAGO, Tokyo, Japan), 산도는 GMK-835N(G-WON, Seoul, Korea), 중량은 K17(KAS, Gyeonggi-do, Korea)로 측정하였다.

에틸포메이트(ethyl formate)는 Agilent 7890A에 Restek 5% diphenyl–95% dimethylpolysiloxane capillary 컬럼(15.0 m × 0.25 mm i.d. 포스핀은 Agilent 7890B에 HP-PLOT/Q 컬럼(30.0 m × 0.53 mm i.d. 검출기로는 FPD를 사용하였으며, 가스 조건은 air 100 mL/min, H2 75 mL/min, N2(make up) 30 mL/min이었다.

(Ren et al., 2011).

𝐶𝑡=∑(Ci+Ci+1)(Ti+1−Ti)/2

자료 분석은 SPSS 25 (IBM, New York, USA)를 이용하였다.

(Fig. 3, Table 6).

이러한 연구에는 대체 훈증제 개발뿐 아니라 열처리(Monzon et al., 2006), 저온처리(Sharp, 1993), 방사선 조사(Follett et al., 2013; Lee et al., 2014), 저산소 처리(Oh and Choi, 2014), 복합처리(Lee et al., 2016; Jeon et al., 2022; Cho et al., 2020) 등이 포함된다.
